MUDVAYNE Start Early, DEFTONES Cancel At Minneapolis SUMMER SANITARIUM
July 28, 2003Chris Riemenschneider of the Minneapolis Star Tribune is reporting that Sunday's (July 27) Summer Sanitarium concert in the Metrodome "started with ill feelings. Opening band MUDVAYNE — touring for the first time without its gimmicky gore costumes — inexplicably went on 10 minutes early and was off the stage before most fans got through security. Then came the really bad news: Moody metalists the DEFTONES had to cancel their second-in-line set. Frontman Chino Moreno was reportedly hospitalized for an undisclosed illness.
"The cancellation left hour-long gaps between the remaining three bands, during which the show devolved into a giant breast-flashing contest.
"By the time Top 40 rap-metal band LINKIN PARK went on, the crowd was starving for entertainment. The band satisfied the way a Subway sandwich does: with a lot of different flavors wrapped into one easy-to-swallow package.
"Even with two vocalists (one raps drably, and the other sort of just whines out melodies),LINKIN PARK's strengths were clearly in its climactic guitar bursts. After finishing its hits 'Crawling' and 'Somewhere I Belong', the band played an extra 15 minutes to cover the DEFTONES.
"LIMP BIZKIT struggled to even fill its hour-long set. With new guitarist Mike Smith barely broken in, Durst spent half the set talking. He also ate up time with cover songs, including METALLICA's 'Welcome Home (Sanitarium)' and a terrible run of THE WHO's 'Behind Blue Eyes'. However, the BIZKIT's own songs such as 'Nookie' still resulted in rabid crowd response reminiscent of the group's Woodstock '99 appearance — when it upstaged METALLICA." Read more.
